All welcome: Classes are all mixed ability and traditional Qi Gong is practised in a slow, relaxed manner. The exercises are easier than learning Tai Chi, but getting a sense of what Qi Gong is about takes time and regular practise and so I always ask new students to enrol for a minimum of one month.
Qi Gong, or Chi Kung, translated literally means ‘working with the energy of life’.
Through the regular practice of Qi Gong you can develop your strength, health and energy. Classes consist of warm ups and stretching to release energy blockages, in conjunction with ancient Chinese exercises, coiling movements and a variety of Qi Gong sets. With time, students can progress and deepen their understanding of Qi Gong.
What to wear: Clothes that you feel comfortable in and which allow free movement are best. Flat trainers, or similar, are the most suitable shoes – other than that you don’t need a mat or any other equipment.

An introduction to the Tai Ji class
Each class lasts for 1½ hours and has three main sections:
- Preparatory exercises to help relax and loosen the limbs
- A standing or sitting exercise to develop fitness, awareness and concentration (called “Qi Gong”)
- Learning the original Yang family long form, consisting of 108 flowing movements practised at a slow and relaxed pace.
While it takes many years to become skilled in the practice of Tai Ch Chuan, benefits are often seen by students within weeks of starting. After two months (the minimum recommended time) and with a reasonable level of commitment, you will have the following:
- An introduction to: – Eight preparatory exercises – Two Qi Gong exercises – The dragon walk – The first eight moves of the form
- An basic understanding of the benefits to be gained from the practice of Tai Chi Chuan and Qi Gong exercises
- An appreciation of three important elements in the practice of Tai Chi Chuan: – Relaxation – Awareness – Concentration
- An awareness of the movement of energy
- An idea of how your health, fitness, suppleness and stamina might improve with further training
